Mudkin by Stephen Gammell

2011/32 pgs

About the Book: A young girl is playing in the mud when she discovers Mudkin, who asks her to be queen.

Sarah Teenlibrarian Says: You want a quirky book? Mudkin it is! The book is a mostly wordless picture book. There are a few bits of text when Mudkin first appears and talks to the young girl, but Mudkin's speech is brown squiggly mud sploches, which lets the reader come up with part of the conversation.

Mudkin is a book to encourage imagination and it's a perfect book for adults and kids to read together, especially since at first I don't know that younger readers will understand what is going on in the story. But after a read through or two, I think kids will take it and run with it and create their own text to the story. Perfect for one on one reading, but not a pick for storytime.

The watercolor illustrations look like they were drawn with mud, adding to the feel of splashing around in the mud on a rainy day. A great book for imaginative play!
