Dirtball Pete by Eileen Brennan

2010/32 pgs

About the Book: Poor Pete-he's just always dirty! But Mom has told him he's getting a bath and he must stay clean because he has a role to perform in "The 50 States and Why They're Great!" But it's not easy to stay clean!

Sarah Teenlibrarian Says: Dirtball Pete is a quirky little book. In some ways, he's like a cousin to Pigpen (of Peanuts fame) which is what made me pick up the book in the first place. The text is funny and full of humor for adults as well as kids. Any adult who has had trouble keeping their child clean will relate and I'm sure kids will relate to Pete's struggles to stay freshly bathed-his speech blew away and he just had to save it!

The illustrations are a bit cartoonish which I think adds to the fun. There's a great story about self-confidence and not juding by looks, but it never feels preachy and I doubt kids will realize there's a lesson packed into the story at all.
