A Bride's Story, Vol. 1

by Kaoru Mori
translated by William Flanagan
190 pages

A Bride's Story, Vol. 1 is the first in a manga series about a nineteenth-century Central Asian bride.  Amir, age 20, has been married off to Karluk, a 12-year-old boy.  Though there are some miscommunications along the way, she seems to assimilate into Karluk's family very nicely.  However, her family wants her back.

This is a fairly simple story, but I have the feeling it will get more complex in the next volumes.  The art is good and the characters are intriguing, especially Karluk's grandmother.  I would have appreciated color illustrations because I had trouble deciphering some of the illustrations without it.  I can't wait to see how Amir and Karluk's relationship progresses as the story unfolds.
