Vagabond: Volume 32

by Takehiko Inoue, based on the novel Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, 202 pages

Musashi, still trying to work out what he's after in life, encounters the legendary Ito Ittôsai, who relishes the opportunity to cross blades with another swordsman of his and Kojirô's caliber.

It's fascinating to compare and contrast the different men's perspectives on what they've devoted their lives to. Ittôsai's is much more cheerfully black and white than Musashi's questioning outlook, and no one quite knows Kojirô's view--but whatever it is, it makes him stronger than anyone. It's good to see Musashi maturing and growing and not just rushing toward his artificial goal of invincibility as he once did. I want him and Kojirô to meet again and have another joyful stick fight, but I'm afraid of the result if there's not another tasty-smelling dinner to distract them before it turns into something more.
