"Savvy" by Ingrid Law

342 pages

In "Savvy," Mississippi "Mibs" Beaumont tells the story of her 13th birthday, which she has been anxiously waiting for...not because she is especially excited about being a teenager, but because each member of her family receives a unique power when she or she turns 13. Her grandpa can shift the earth; everything her mother creates turns out perfect; one brother controls the weather and the other has power over electricity. A family emergency the day before Mibs' birthday makes discovering and adjusting to her new skills even more complicated, and she decides to take matters into her own hands. Of course, nothing goes according to plan. The story that follows is funny and touching, but the characters are what really stand out to me about this book. I love the way that Mibs (the narrator) looks at the world, and I fell in love with her entire family as well as a couple of people they meet throughout the book. They are all so warm and lively that I felt like I knew them and felt at ease with them even though they're not real. This is one that adults and children can enjoy.
