Family Affair

By: Debbie Macomber; 102 pp

I usually do not enjoy romance novels by Debbie Macomber much, but this one was cute.
Lacey Lancaster moved to San Francisco when she got divorced over a year ago and her new friend keeps trying to get her to go out with her neighbor, cute Jack Walker. However, Lacey still does not think she is ready for a romance; besides she has no time.
Lacey's cat, Cleo, has been a comfort to Lacey so Lacey feels she does not need a man anyway.
Besides Jack is always arguing with his girlfriend, Sarah. Then Lacey finds out Sarah is not Jack's girlfriend, but she is his sister. This changes things a bit for Lacey.
This turns into a romance any way for Jack and Lacey, and just when things are going great, Jack gets a promotion and has to transfer to Seattle! Lacey knows that long distance relationships will not work out for her - so does this mean their relationship is over?

  1. "Family Affair" is a very cute yet far too short novel by Debbie Macomber. It was first published in 1994 as part of a collection and to reissue it in hardcover at just under 100 pages (making it a novella rather than a novel) with no mention that it was previously published seems like a rip-off of loyal Macomber fans. Having said that, the story is a cute one that will make readers smile. Lacy's hurt over her divorce is palpable, and it is hard to read as she struggles to get past the hurt, but at the same time it is good to see her begin to fall in love again, and also learn to stand up to a demanding boss. The story of both their cats is also fun to read and at times quite amusing (although I wish Macomber had spent some time advising readers to get their pets spayed/neutered and to get pets at a shelter and not pet stores). There is also a nicely done side plot involving Jack's sister Sarah and her boyfriend Mark. It is a very cute book but could have used a lot more developing particularly Lacy's and Jack's jobs and the Sarah/Mark relationship.
