Scrawl

by Mark Shulman
230 pages

Scrawl is the notebook/journal of a high school bully named Tod.  Tod has been assigned to write in this notebook in detention each afternoon in the presence of his guidance counselor.  Though he is reluctant to write in this notebook at first, he eventually warms to the task.  Through the course of this novel, the reader comes to realize that Tod is not your average, overweight bully.  He's intelligent, a great student, and he has a sensitive side.

Overall, this book is witty and insightful.  It's a great read for grades 7-10, but has many elements that even adults would enjoy.  It's definitely one of those books that makes you re-think stereotypes.
