"The Replacement" by Brenna Yovanoff

"The Replacement" by Brenna Yovanoff
343 pages
There is something strange about Mackie Doyle.  There is something strange about his family, his school and his town as well.  Mackie isn't truly a member of his family but only a few people know this.  Mackie is a replacement - an otherworldly replacement.  Yovanoff weaves an eerie tale of kidnapping, blood letting and perfect storms gone awry.  The tale unfolds to reveal a town just barely holding together at the seams because the town's survival depends on the continued human sacrifice of some of their children. Mackie is drawn into a dark and grisly underworld where is he learns about his true origins. He surfaces as an unlikely hero in an effort to protect his human family and his underworld family.

Yovaoff is a master storyteller.  Her tale has all the perfectly twisted elements that echo the imaginings of Stephen King.  Finally a tale for young adult readers who long for the terror of King with their audience and interests in mind.  Yovanoff adds plenty of interesting characters to the mix that leave the reader with all sorts of strange and creepy visuals.  Looking to be frightened, delighted and surprised?

  1. I think I reviewed this one, too. I know I read it recently and liked it. It had a good blend of mystery, fantasy and scariness.
