"Fat Cat" by Robin Brande

"Fat Cat" by Robin Brande
330 pages
Catherine is an overweight teen thrown into action by two unconnected happenings.  First, she is witness to a conversation she was never meant to hear.  The reader can only be certain that whatever the contents of the conversation - it deeply affected Catherine's friendships and her own perceptions of her body and beauty.  Catherine is a dedicated student of science.  By chance she lands a project that requires all her attention on hominids - early human beings.  Catherine decides to face her own fears and frustrations by making herself into a human experiment. She will live as hominid - as closely as modern times allow.  The experiment requires an extreme adjustment in diet, exercise and exposure to technology.

Brande keeps the reader interested for two very good reasons. The reader wants to know what Catherine overheard that changed her outlook and friendships so extremely.  The reader also wants to know just what happens when an overweight teen ditches potato chips and the couch for whole grains and walking absolutely everywhere. Brande weaves friendships into Catherine's story that really add to her choices all the way through.  This is a well-written tale with a lot of meat - even if the central character has gone largely vegetarian.
