Mary's Penny by Tanya Landman, illustrated by Richard Holland

2010/40 pgs.

About the Book: A father is trying to decide which of his three children will take over the farm and makes them take a test.

Sarah Teenlibrarian Says: Mary's Penny is a folktale (the book jacket calls it a feminist folktale). Mary has two brothers who are told to buy something to fill the house with the penny their father gives them. Of course, the brother's aren't able to solve the riddle and Mary does when she asks for a turn. Mary proves to be clever and resourceful.

The illustrations give the book and old fashioned feel which I really liked. A nice tale and would be great with older picture book readers.
