Oh, man. I so wanted to like this book. I mean, we picked it for The Big Read next year, right? And I get that Dashiell Hammett is like the king of noir and Sam Spade is the godfather of all hard-boiled detectives but I wasn't really excited about the writing. It was pretty forced in the beginning and I did not love the descriptive passages. I like mysteries that give you everything you need to solve the problem rather than keeping things from you so the author is the only one who gets to solve the crime. That's lazy. I hope people will like it and by the end, I didn't hate it. Not much of an endorsement, is it?! Oh well, here we go.....
